Infos on Biorhythm
Scientists researching biorhythm explain each individual's ups and downs according to the rhythmic changes of our physical, emotional, and intellectual constitution. Each of the different aspects changes sinusoidally - the physical aspect cycles once every 23 days, the emotional every 28, and the intellectual every 33 days. "Dangerous" days are the transitional days from negative to positive and vice versa. Each of the rhythms starts at your birth and will flow permanently till you die. If all three aspects are high, people are said to reach their highest efficiency!
Though after a heart attack or a stroke research has found that at the respective point in the people's lives their biorhythm starts again at zero i.e. at birth.
What does biorhythm mean?
Theory:
At the turn of the century, the medical doctor Dr. Wilhelm Fliess compared his patients' case histories and found coinciding rhythms. There were active and passive phases in the physical, emotional, and intellectual aspect of each individual from which he deduced biorhythms: the physical cycles once every 23 days, the emotional once every 28, and the intellectual once every 33 days.
Interpretation:
If the sinusoid is above the critical line, you are in good shape in the respective area (physical, emotional or intellectual). If your physical cycle is top, you are in a very good condition, the best time for surgery for example. If your emotional cycle is top, you are in high spirits and your social contacts will be positive. If your intellectual cycle is top, your intellect is sharp, you can concentrate well and have lots of great ideas.
If your respective cycles are below the critical line, you are experiencing a period of low performance. Physically you would be slack, far from fit. Emotionally you wouldn't be in a good mood. Intellectually you won't be too sharp or creative since you have difficulties concentrating on what you are doing.
Then there are the days when the respective cycle meets the critical line, even more so if more than one cycle meets the critical line. Physically you would feel knocked out, you should really avoid strenuous efforts or surgery. Emotionally you would be in a temper or sad, you might have some kind of emotional outbreak and better avoid conflicts or discussions. Intellectually you would feel lazy and might want to avoid tasks that require concentration.
Biorhythms are not meant to "prognosticate" or explain events, however they help you to overcome the situation. It doesn't really matter whether you believe in biorhythms or not. Some people think it's humbug, others are ready to use those information. Some medical doctors would choose appointments for surgery according to the patient's biorhythm, soccer trainers take biorhythms into account when planning their players' training units.
Physically: Body (23-days-cycle):
It determines your energy, decision making, and physical condition:
"hilltop": excellent physical constitution, high performance and hardiness.
"valley": you should relax, liability to diseases, low performance.
Emotional: Soul (28-days-cycle):
It effects the sensory systems and determines your ability for emotional sentiments, for your ability to be amiable and creative.
"hilltop": creative peak, stable frame of mind.
"valley": instable frame of mind, tendency to be moody.
Intellectually: Intellect (33-days-cycle):
It determines intellectual faculties.
"hilltop": high thinking power, high concentration, brilliance.
"valley": low thinking power, difficulties to learn.
The first two cycles are commonly considered most important. The combination of the two reveals the days when you feel good or rather instable.
More generally, biorhythm designates the cycles of your bodily functions. There is some good research on the day/night fluctuation already. The biorhythm determined by your date of birth however is still being discussed scientifically. Nevertheless it is interesting to take your biorhythm into account when you watch your own health - you are free to find out, whether the biorhythm theory is actually applicable or not... ;-) We all know those days when the best craftsman's fingers seem to be all thumbs, days when you could freak out during a minor discussion, when exams are even more of a torture, or days when you shift your appointments again and again because you can't seem to enter the matter. The same is true for the opposite: there are times when nothing seems too complicated, when your energy seems endless.
In Japan, science dealing with such fluctuations in our productivity as well as with energy cycles in the field of biology is said to be widely acknowledged in public. In more than 5000 large companies each employee's biorhythm is calculated and displayed at their desks to signal critical days to co-workers. Furthermore, employees on outdoor duty are said to be doing indoor duty on critical days - e.g. members of the police or bus drivers - and ever since this measure was introduced, accidents are said to have decreased by 35%. Now this would be a success that could account for the validity of the biorhythm theory.
